Shu Uemura Tint in Gelato in CR04 Spiced Orange, CR01 Blood Orange & PK01 Berry Berry

The secret to soft, flushed cheeks and dewy, stained lips is all contained in one sleek, shiny tube. It's a liquid lipstick and cream blush in one. It's soft yet intense. It's creamy. It's blendable. "It" is the Shu Uemura Tint in Gelato lip and cheek stain ($28 at Holt Renfrew, Sephora, Hudson's Bay and shuuemura.ca) launched as part of the Mika Ninagawa for Shu Uemura Summer 2014 collection to join the permanent collection.

In essence, the Tint in Gelato is a multi-tasking cream product for the lips and cheeks designed for both make-up artist professionals and everyday women. The Tint in Gelato is available in 12 fresh shades - AT01 Cassis Delight, AT02 Sugar Plum, AT03 Fantasy Orange, AT04 Lemon Souffle, BG01 Puffy Chocolate, CR01 Blood Orange, CR02 Momo Sweet, CR03 Fancy Orange, CR04 Spiced Orange, PK01 Berry Berry, PK02 Milky Framboise, and PK03 Sakura Cream. Is it just me or do those names all sound astoundingly delicious? Excuse me while I go grab something sweet to eat.

I put three colours to the test - CR04 Spiced Orange (peachy nude), CR01 Blood Orange (muted coral) and PK01 Berry Berry (blue-based bright pink). One look at the sleek, silver tube and I was already drawn in. I'm a magpie when it comes to beauty products. Shiny things excite me to no end, as does the ring applicator that's reminiscent of a spoon. The not-too-big-not-too-small tip bends back and forth for an even and precise application.

As for the formula, there is no scent or flavour whatsoever (which I truly appreciate since that's very hard to come by!). Texture-wise it's non-sticky and very creamy and smooth. Think Rimmel Apocalips minus the tacky watermelon scent and slightly more matte. Staying power is about 5-6 hours on the cheeks and 2-3 hours for the lips (plus an additional 1-2 hours of staining with bolder colours). On the lips, the product is not transfer free nor does it claim to be, but it's something to be aware of if you're planning to throw on a white t-shirt or kiss your boyfriend/girlfriend after applying.

What sets this product apart from others is its versatility, which stems from its blendability. One layer on the lips yields full semi-matte colour payoff, yet with a little blending you can get a much softer stained look. Furthermore, you can simply blot the product with a tissue to remove the slight glossy sheen for a full matte, full coverage lip look. As for use on the cheeks, a little goes a very long way. With my fingertips, I like to pat a tiny bit of product onto the apples of my cheeks blending backwards to just under my temples for a healthy glow.

As a side note, you could probably take any cream lip product and attempt to use it as a blush and vice versa. But it's not that easy. Believe me, I've tried it.  More often than not, that kind of product duality is hard to find. Lipsticks are too slippery and dewy on the cheeks and blushes are too drying on the lips. Keep in mind that skin on my cheeks is "normal", if not slightly oily and my lips are naturally very dry. In some ways, this is where the Tint in Gelato falls a little short.

As much as I wish this was the perfect product for both cheeks and lips, it isn't. I'll go as far as saying that it's flawless on the cheeks. As for the lips, the product looks to be healthy and moist on my lips but not effortlessly so. Going over the lips that have the smallest dry patch leads to rather unattractive emphasis of those patches, therefore application calls for thorough exfoliation, pre-moisturizing, and careful placement. It's also slightly drying when worn for an entire day without touchups. Don't get me wrong - the end result is worth the trouble if you're up for it...

CR04 Spiced Orange (the perfect peachy nude lip)

CR01 Blood Orange (the natural coral)

PK01 Berry Berry (the flattering pop of pink)

As a lip product, the Tint in Gelato has its downsides and there are most certainly better products yielding similar results, but it's one of the best formulations of cream blush/tint for my skin type, as it blends into the skin like a dream and has a natural, sheer finish. All in all, the lightweight, blendable formula in a pretty range of universally flattering yet vibrant colours makes the Tint in Gelato worth the stop at your nearest Shu counter this Spring/Summer.

Skylight 147 - CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss

It is time. Time for sunshine and birds chirping. Time for pastels. The CoverGirl Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss in Skylight ($5.99) is appropriate in every way - glossy, blue and bright. I'm really enjoying the Outlast Stay Brilliant Nail Gloss formula (see my previous reviews of Orange Oasis and Appletini).

The formula is meant to be a 3-in-1 base coat, polish, and top coat. I think that the polish delivers in all three respects. On average, polishes last 2-3 days on my fingertips. Depending on how dainty I'm feeling, the nail glosses have the potential to last 3 to 5. It's self leveling, non-streaky, opaque in two coats, and ultra shiny. I usually don't photograph my nail swatches with a top coat. In this case, the CoverGirl Nail Gloss doesn't need it.

Oh! And there's 45 creme and shimmer finishes. I've got my eye on a few other pastels - Peaches & Cream 125 and Mint Mojito 285. For the full listing, check out CoverGirl.com.

What are you wearing on your nails this Spring?

WEEK 4: The Scrub Mask | Montagne Jeunesse Mask Off Roundup

For the love of scrubs! It's Scrub Mask week here at the Canadian Beauty Bloggers Montagne Jeunesse Mask Off (#CBBMJMASKOFF). Mangos, and apricots and exfoliating, oh my! These fresh fruity scents make me dream of a tropical skincare paradise. Let's see what the other gals thought...

Comfort - 3.5/5
"The crushed apricot was fine enough that it exfoliated without scratching the skin. I didn’t let it dry fully so it didn’t get tight or uncomfortable." - Megan Joy

"It got pretty hard and crusty as it dried, but it wasn't very uncomfortable. Just a little weird, I guess." - Ivory Avenue

"I was expecting this mask to hurt when I scrubbed and dry tightly on my skin. Surprisingly it was actually quite comfortable! The exfoliation was fairly gentle." - Swatch and Review

Aroma - 3.67/5
"This mask smelled fruity and good, but just not as good as the others that I've tried so far." - Chantal's Corner

"The smell wasn’t unpleasant and it didn’t irritate me, but at the same time it wasn’t my favourite scent either." - Nicole About Town

Results - 3.87/5
"This is definitely an abrasive exfoliator. I felt it working quite well when I massaged it in." - Workday Ramblings

"I have been breaking out lately and I have dry patches that previous blemishes left behind. This mask buffed away the dry areas and left my skin feeling great. I would still  suggest doing a patch test if you have sensitive skin though!" - Megan Joy

Ease of Use - 3.53/5
"It was another thick mask so it was easy to apply. Also, unlike the other masks this one had the perfect amount in the package. I used it all and didn't have any extra that I had to toss out." - Just J

"The entire process was fairly simple and mess-free. I just prefer peel-off or sheet masks." - Exquisitely Chic

"Application was a breeze. Removal, on the other hand, was a little tricky… If you didn't moisten the mask enough, I imagine it could get very painful." - Ivory Avenue

Alrighty, so it looks like the Chocolate Mask is still in the lead. There's still the Mud Mask up next week, so we may see an exciting turn of events in the crowning of the mask of all masks... who knows...?
  1. Chocolate Mask - 15.83
  2. Scrub Mask - 14.57
  3. Oil Mud Mask - 14.33
  4. Peel Off - 13.72

Rimmel Stay Blushed Liquid Cheek Tint in Pop of Pink and Sunkissed Cherry

Blush-gasm. For the love of blush, I have been graced with the opportunity to review the Rimmel Stay Blushed Liquid Cheek Tints ($5.99). Through my blogging endeavours, I received two colours - 001 Pop of Pink and 004 Sunkissed Cherry. In addition, the Rimmel Stay Blushed Liquid Cheek Tints also come in the colours 002 Touch of Berry, 003 Peach Flush, and 005 Apricot Glow. If it's any indication of how much I enjoy these, I'll have you know that I want them all.

The packaging of the liquid cheek tint is a little boring but I'm kind of digging the squeeze tube. Despite the lack of finesse with the white plastic, it's quite hygienic. Unless you can somehow fit your germ-ridden fingers or brush into the little hole of the tube, you're golden and practically germ-free.

The colour of the Rimmel Stay Blushed Liquid Cheek Tints. One word. A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. I mean, check out that pigmentation. The photo shown above was was only the tiniest squeeze of the tube. Pop of Pink is a bright, warm pink while Sunkissed Cherry is somewhat more "natural" for a slightly deeper brown-toned flush.

Not only that, it blends out like a dream into the skin. Despite looking harsh when swatched, a little blending or stippling goes a long way. The texture feels light, almost "whipped" into smoothness. On the skin, the cheek tint feels slightly wet, but the product eventually dries down to a natural matte finish and lasts all day long. The product claims are along the lines of "stays on your face for 24H". I don't doubt it, but I cherish my beauty rest dearly, so I haven't gotten the opportunity to test that out.

001 Pop of Pink

004 Sunkissed Cherry

I typically apply this blush in one of two ways. I squeeze as little as possible onto the back of my hand then (1) swirl the product around with the Make Up For Ever Artisan 148 Blending Brush and stipple the product onto the apples of my cheek or (2) pat my fingers onto the back of my hand to ensure that I don't pick up to much product, then pat the products on my cheeks.

As far as I'm aware, all colours in the Rimmel Stay Blushed Cheek Tint range are shimmer-free, which makes for a wearable, natural flush. All in all, this product is a big, fat, blushing YES. Great pigmentation, long-lasting, and a lightweight formulation - if you're a blush lover (and even if you're not), this one's for you. (What I mean is that blush is for everyone...!)

Have you tried the Rimmel Stay Blushed Cheek Tints?

VIOLENT LIPS Raspberry Swirl Lip Tattoos

Once in a while, a product takes me back to a time when I was in Grade 3, obsessed with that bad a$$ feeling that you get when you've got a Spiderman tattoo on your knee. I was totally that girl and I had a nostalgic throwback moment with the Violent Lips Raspberry Swirl Glitterati Mix Lip Appliques ($9.99 at obsessedcanada.com with free, no-minimum shipping within Canada).

Violent Lips are like the all grown-up version of temporary tattoos, regarded by Allure magazine as the "future of lipstick". Keep in mind that they're still for bad a$$es (like myself) and not for the faint of heart.

The Raspberry Swirl Lip Appliques are a pack of 3 dual-toned pink glitter lips. Nothing says rebellious glitter princess more than these glitter lips. The product itself is vegan, gluten and latex free.

Application is fairly straightforward and similar to that of a temporary tattoo. First, you pop the pieces out and measure the applique to your lips. The paper backing has detailed lines and instructions for fitting the width and depth of the product to your own. It took all of three snips to fit to my lips (two on the sides and one on the bottom). I was doubtful of the fit but it worked out pretty well in the end. Next, you peel off the plastic film and press the sticky side on the lips. Then, wet a cotton ball and pat the paper until it is soaked. The paper should slip off when the lip applique is stuck to your lips. Lastly, you seal the product in by dabbing a bit more water over top, concentrating on the outer edges of the mouth.

My first attempt was a fail because I didn't use enough water and part of the tattoo didn't stick to my lips. I was left with peeling, uneven glitter lips. Take two was much more successful. The end result was pretty darn amazing from afar. I'm going to avoid my typical close up lips photo because my lips looked wonky at the corners and required a lot more water that I actually used. Application takes a while to get used to but once I got the hang of it, it wasn't too tedious.

Violent Lips claims that the lip appliques last 4 to 8 hours with eating and drinking. I'd agree with the lower side of that spectrum, but they do last a lot longer than I had initially expected. The great thing about a glitter lip tattoo rather than actual glitter lips is that you wouldn't be eating the glitter because the product stays put.

Could this be the lipstick of the future? Unfortunately, I think not. I prefer applying my lipstick straight out of the tube (it's faster and easier). However, patterns, colours, and designs (glitter, rainbow, leopard, polka dot) aren't something that can be mimicked by a simple tube of lipstick, so if you're looking for something fun and wild, be sure to check out what Violent Lips has to offer on the Obsessed Canada website!

What do you think of lip tattoos? Would you ever try them?

The Face Shop Cushion Screen Cell Foundation in 02 Natural Beige

I'm embracing my "Asian" side by trying something from all the way across the ocean. The Face Shop Cushion Screen Cell [Foundation] SPF 50+ PA+++ ($23.99 on ibuybeauti.com) is my attempt at venturing into parts unknown. Yes... the cushion foundation is popular in Korea, but the screen cushion is even more new and innovative.

What is a cushion foundation? Instead of bottled packaging, the product is soaked in a cushion compact. You're meant to press a puff onto the sponge and then use the sponge to apply foundation to your face.Supposedly, the cushion creates a more natural, even coverage on the skin.

Like a little child playing with lego, I took apart the pieces of The Face Shop Cushion Screen Cell. Essentially it's made up of 5 parts. (1) a large, bulky compact with mirror, which houses all the other pieces (2) a puff applicator (3) the "sponge"/cushion (4) the screen (5) the screen holder. The difference between the Face Shop Cushion Screen Cell and your ordinary cushion foundation is this - the 0.028 mm screen almost filters the liquid foundation so a lesser amount of the product on the puff applicator for a more delicate finish.

The product housed inside the foundation makes 5 specific claims - coverage, sun protection, whitening, anti-wrinkle, and moisturizing. In my experience, I found the Face Shop Cushion Screen Cell to be medium buildable coverage and smooths over imperfections without emphasizing dry patches. The finish is extremely dewy and almost gives a "wet" look to the skin. The product feels lightweight on the skin (as expected of dewy finish products). Wear time is about 5 to 6 hours on my oily face.

Natural Beige can mean many different things. In the case of the Face Shop, natural beige is the darkest colour and still too light for me. Even worse, since it contains SPF, there's a lot of flashback in photos.

Overall, I'm not a fan of this product, as it's not suited to my skin type at all. It gives me the classic dewy, healthy, perfect Asian skin look, but it doesn't last for long and the colour is way too light. I can't say much about the skincare claims, but the suncare seems to work just fine. The Face Shop Cushion Screen Cell is best suited for those who are dry to normal skin types and looking for a lightweight dewy-finish foundation.

Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge and Silicone Liner Brush

If they created it, every beauty addict and their mom must have it. This much is true when it comes to the beloved Pixiwoo (Chapman) sisters. New in the Real Techniques range now available in Canada are the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge  ($9.99) and the Real Techniques Silicone Liner Brush ($8.99) at Pharmasave, Lawtons Drugs, London Drugs and online at Farleyco.ca

Before the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge, my favourite way to apply foundation was with a wedge sponge - those Quo brand ones from Shoppers Drug Mart. This is definitely a step up from disposable wedges, as it has three different dimensions. (1) the flat side - for the largest areas of your face (2) the rounded edge - for stippling and blending (3) the edge - for hard to reach areas and precision blending.

Who knew a sponge could be so versatile? Use it dry for a fuller coverage or use it wet for something more sheer and natural. Once you use a sponge, you can't go back. Sponges are great for blending out streak marks and achieving a natural, even coverage from your foundation.

The material that the sponge is made of is easy to clean with a bit of gentle facial cleanser, however I don't think it's the best quality. It's not that it absorbs a too much excess product. After a couple weeks of use, there are already tears in the sponge from where my long-ish nails had attempted to squeeze the water out.

I fear that the Miracle complexion sponge is a gateway drug to the Beauty Blender (of which is double the price ~$22). For now, I'm content with the Miracle Complexion Sponge, as it's well-priced and works like a dream with my heavier coverage foundations (Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet Plus, Rimmel Stay Matte Mousse, CoverGirl Outlast 3-in-1).

[Right: Real Techniques; Left: Bristled Brush]

In theory, the silicone liner brush is meant to provide precise application of eyeliner without pulling or tugging the skin. In practice, I was not as impressed.

The fact that the Real Techniques Silicone Liner Brush doesn't have bristles is actually its downfall. The lack of brush hairs creates an inability to pick up product. Instead, this results in the need to get the product on the piece of silicone in a "scooping" motion, and then plop it down on the lid. I find that compared to a bristled brush (ex: the Eco-tools Angled Eyeliner Brush), it doesn't create as even of a line. Yes, the tip is very fine, but the silicone doesn't allow the product to glide in the same way that a brush would. Perhaps, I'm not using it correctly and I need to play with it a bit more. For now, I'm not a fan. If my thoughts change, I'll be sure to let you know.

For the most part, I've been above and beyond impressed with Real Techniques beauty tools. They're well-made and perform extremely well in comparison to products that are much more expensive.

Rimmel Colour Rush Balms in Drive Me Nude, Keep Mauving, Give Me A Cuddle, and The Redder The Better

The lip crayon craze is never-ending and I'm certainly not over it. There's Clinique, Revlon, Soap & Glory, New York Color, and now...the Rimmel Lasting Finish Colour Rush Intense Colour Balms ($7.99) have landed in the the drugstores of Canada. I've tried my fair share of the lip crayons from other brands so maybe I can call myself a "Lip Crayon Aficionado"?

The last week has been a toss up between 4 colours - 710 Drive Me Nude (pink-brown nude), 200 Keep Mauving (deep mauve), 100 Give Me a Cuddle (light pink), and 500 the Redder the Better (neutral-toned red). The other three Colour Rush Balm shades include 220 Rumour Has It, 600 On Fire, and 700 Not an Illusion. I swear there's a colour for every occasion.

The Rimmel Colour Rush Colour Balms lean much more lipstick than lip gloss and none of the colours contain shimmer or glitter. In general, the lighter colours are more sheer and require layering for full pigmentation. The deeper colours like "The Redder The Better" need a more precise application that might not be satisfied by the jumbo tip of a lip crayon.

The scent is very similar to the New York Color and Soap and Glory lip crayons. It's a sweet vanilla with no tingly feeling. In terms pigmentation and texture, Rimmel's is very comparable to Revlon or New York Color. Lasting power is decent at 4 hours with eating and drinking. Of course, the darker colours are bound to last longer and leave a stain.

The big claims on this particular product are the moisture and colour. Colour? Check. I'm not so sure about moisture. It's not quite balmy or soft enough to smooth over the dry patches on my lips. I actually find this product to dry out my lips slightly. So, a thorough exfoliation and use of an actual balm prior to using this product is highly recommended.

710 Drive Me Nude

I usually hate nude shades, but I think I've met my match. This one's great for pairing with a heavier eye look or wearing for a muted, natural makeup.

200 Keep Mauving

Keep Mauving is a stellar dupe for something a little pricier - the MUFE Artist Rouge Intense in N9.

100 Give Me a Cuddle

Give Me a Cuddle is my least favourite of the bunch. I don't find it to be flattering on me. Also, what does the name have to do with cuddling? I'm confused.

500 the Redder the Better

The Redder the Better, indeed. I feel like this is the kind of red that would look beautiful on everyone and anyone.

All in all, as an official lip crayon aficionado, I can't say that this is better or worse than any other lip crayon that I've tried. It all comes down to what you look for in a lip product. If you want colour intensity with a slight glossy sheen, then this is the lip crayon for you.

What's your favourite brand of lip crayon?

WEEK 3: Oil+Mud Masque | Montagne Jeunesse Mask Off Roundup

The name "oil" scares me a little. But add "mud into the mix and it's a whole different story. The Olive Oil/Nut Oil Mask is by no means slicking oil all over your face, rather it's the same relaxing at-home spa mask treatment that we've been testing out for the past two weeks!

Yep, this week is Oil Mud Masque Week and the Canadian Beauty Bloggers have flinged around green goop on their faces to bring you their thoughts on the Montagne Jeunesse Cold Pressed Olive Oil Mud Masque and the Nut Oil Mud Masque. Let's see how this one played out...

*steph's sidenote: this week's ratings were 50/50 split in every category, none of my excessive game show lingo should be necessary to get you all riled up for our bloggers' thoughts on the oil mask...

Comfort - 3.33/5
"I'm not used to the drying feeling of masks and I don't like that I can't really move any facial muscles." - Chantal's Corner

Aroma - 3.58/5
"I could swear this smelled like avocadoes and I had to check the ingredients list to be sure! I found the scent to be very soothing and refreshing. What I liked about it as well was that it was a light scent and not overpowering like the other two. My favourite smell-wise is still the chocolate, but this is a close second." - Just J

"A bit intense at first, but it turned into a sweet nutty smell that made me think of marzipan and nutty cakes – which I love." - Ivory Avenue

"This didn't smell like anything, which I am ok with. I have a sensitivity to strong smells and unless it's that chocolate mask, I don't care for a scented face treatment!" - Swatch and Review

Results - 3.75/5
"The only result I saw was tight dry skin afterward." - Workday Ramblings

"As much as I didn't like the smell, my skin felt so soft and moisturized afterwards! The RESULTS of this mask are probably my favourite so far!" - Cosmetic Proof

*steph's sidenote: took Julie's (Swatch and Review) advice this time around and applied the mask with a brush. 100% easier, despite the fact that I look like a man mid-shave.

Ease of Use - 3.67/5
"I noticed this contains clay, and those are my preferred type of mask, so this one pretty much lived up to my expectations. It applied easily and washed off easily in the shower with no greasy film residue. There was a TON of product in this one. Probably enough for 2 applications actually, so I felt a little sad that I couldn't reseal the packet." - Just J

"It was really easy to apply, but I found it took a while to remove." - Chantal's Corner

TOTAL SCORE: 14.33/20

Look's like the Chocolate Mask is still in the lead and the Oil Mask is smack-dab in the middle of the pack:
  1. Chocolate Mask - 15.83
  2. Oil Mask - 14.33
  3. Peel Off Mask - 13.72
Price and Availability: $1.99 at Walmart, Value Drug Mart, Familiprix, Lawtons Drugs, and Farleyco.ca

2 weeks left until we crown the MASK OF ALL MASKS in the #CBBMJMASKOFF. Stay tuned for next week's *drumroll please*..... Scrubs!

Have you ever tried "oil" masks?

Besame Crimson Cream Rouge for Lips and Cheeks

If there's one product you need on your vanity, it's the Besame Crimson Cream Rouge. Not only is the packaging unique and vibrant but the product iteslf is a high-performing red tint for both cheeks and lips. Besame Cosmetics is a brand that recreates elegant, vintage luxury makeup from the 1920s to 1950s. The classic chrysanthemum motifs are found across all of Besame's products.

The Besame Crimson Cream Rouge is a cream lip/cheek tint that retails for $22 at http://www.besamecosmetics.com/. Pricewise, it's mid-range (not drugstore, not high-end) and the packaging plus awesome product makes it worthwhile. I got mine in my May 2013 Wantable Box

The product itself... crazy. Tap your finger onto the red cream and get an insane amount of product on your finger (enough for both cheeks, lips, and then some). Since you literally need the teeniest bit for one application, I know this one's gonna last me a long time (I went through the NYX cream blush in less than 8 months).

The texture is creamy, but not too soft or sticky. It dries to a matte finish which is great for the cheeks but a tad drying on the lips so you might want a balm underneath or a gloss on top.
Oh, and let's not forget the saying power. Long-lasting is an understatement. The Cream Rouge lasts 6+ hours on my oily skin.

The only issue with such a pigmented product is that you can end up looking like a doll or clown (or just plain crazy). For example...

Blending with a light hand or a brush with loosely packed hairs is absolutely necessary. A little time spent buffing and blending the product into the skin makes for the perfect natural flush.

Do you own any red blushes?
