6 Looks with the Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book

Give me a palette of 24 eyeshadows in colors that range from neutral to ridiculous and I'll be sure to play. I've been fooling around with the Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book ($66 CAD, exclusively at Sephora - reviewed here)  for the past two months. Using the 6 groupings of coordinating color quads, I've created 6 eyeshadow looks. 

Solar/Nephilim/Platonic/Mandala

Anti-star/Estrella/Black Star/Starflyer

Moz/Heaven Knows/Smiths/Leather

Damned/Division/Depeche/Brass Knuckles

Banshee/Violator/Gothica/Fascination Street

Crosses/Covenant/Craft/Cult

But of course, you don't have to stick to the grouped quads in the palette. I'm no good at math, but there's probably hundreds of potential eyeshadow looks you could create with the Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book.

Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book

Is there such thing as makeup porn? Because it kind of feels like it with the Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book ($66 CAD, exclusively at Sephora). Never have I felt so strongly for a formulation of eyeshadows together in one awesome palette. The Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book is a palette of 24 eyeshadows in varying colours and finishes. The palette is split into 6 different colour combos of 4 eyeshadows for easy use - a neutral base shade, lid shade, crease shade and accent shade. 

Before I get into the nitty gritty of the swatches and whatnot, I'd like to make a comment about the packaging. The raised studs in the shape of a star are cool but the cardboard seriously detracts from that. I hate cardboard palettes. For one, they look cheap... and what if I'm doing my makeup while drinking coffee and have a little spill? Goodbye, pretty palette. 

In terms of formulation... 

The Good: Holy ASLKDFJSDFASF. The Kat Von D eyeshadows are some of the best I've ever tried. According to the almighty Sephora website, it's a patented, triple-milled formula, which explains why every single one of the eyeshadows is soft and smooth and almost creamy, easily blendable, ridiculously pigmented, and long-wearing. 

The Bad: Nothing. Aside from formulation I'll be nit-picky about the colour varieties in the palette. There's 5 matte brow bone colours. Yes, they are all slightly different, but I wouldn't mind having a satin peach champagne or a shimmery light gold. Perhaps for someone who's into more neutrals, this set of shadows may be a little too much over-the-top colour. 

The Sephora website says this palette includes matte, pearl, shimmer and iridescent finishes. But I'll call it how I see it and label the shades as such: 

• Mattes (M) - no shimmer, glitter, or iridescence 
• Satin/Shimmers (S) - fine shimmer with no chunky sparkles
• Glitters (G) - a ton of chunky sparkles
• Loves (❤) - particularly awesome eyeshadows

After testing these all out on my face, I have strong attraction to a few of the quads. Firstly, the neutrals. They're so beautiful *faints*. Secondly, wearing the purples makes me feel like a unicorn. Oftentimes the wrong kind of purple can make one look bruised or swollen but the pastel lilac shade livens things up. Lastly and most surprisingly, I love the warmth of the orange-toned quad. I had expected Mandala (matte peach orange) to make my eyes look like they were inflamed but it's is actually quite flattering on the eyes, especially when paired with Nephilim. 

The other three quads contain beautiful shades but personally, they're not for me. I had a hard time thinking of ways to use the dark green and blue quads because I find that dark shades close off my already small eyes. 

Overall, if you're in a neutrals comfort zone then you probably won't be interested in this palette. But if you've ever flirted with the idea of coloured eyeshadow, then the Kat Von D Star Studded Eyeshadow Book will tickle your fancy. It's got ridiculous colours and while some are not particularly wearable, others somehow manage to look quite flattering.

Kat Von D the Star Studded Look Set

Holiday value sets are making their way into Sephora. If you like mini (aka fun size) beauty products, then right around now is the perfect time to try out a plethora of brands and products without the commitment of full-size. That being said, I've been playing around with the Kat Von D the Star Studded Look set ($24), which contains three deluxe-size Kat Von D favourites - the Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Underage, Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper, and Kat Von D Immortal Lash Mascara. 

The Kat Von D the Star Studded Look retails for $24 CAD for $32 in value per the Sephora website. I've taken the liberty of calculating values for this set of minis and the $32 total value is accurate (I'm studying accounting. So I kind of like this stuff... except when it's on an exam).

Kat Von D Studded Kiss Lipstick in Underage ($26 full size // $10.40 mini) - Holy mother of pigmentation. This satin finish fire-engine red is HOT. The formulation is good but not amazing, it's not as creamy as you might expect and drags on the lips slightly. Other than that, the colour is superbly opaque in 2 layers and lasts through multiple meals (~7 hours). Plus, how cute is the mini lipstick bullet? 

Kat Von D Immortal Lash Mascara ($25 full size // $14.36 mini) - This is probably the most torturous looking mascara wand I've ever seen. The plastic bristles spiral around the wand and are concentrated at the very tip. This mascara claims to be a 3-in-1, do-it-all 24H formula that lengthens, curls, and coats. While no mascara has ever lived up to the curl claim on my stick straight lashes, the lengthening properties work for me (see the results below). If I wore mascara for 24 hours, I fear my lashes might fall off but this one stays all day without smudging or flaking so it gets my seal of approval. 

Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper ($23 full size // $8.05 mini) - I can see why all I read online is raves for this liquid liner. The applicator is actually a number of very fine brush hairs stuck together to create a very precise tip. When I first used this liner, it seemed a little watery but with a little shaking and upside down storage, the formula was the blackest of opaque blacks - no need for double swiping. What I love about this liner is that it doesn't bleed or smudge and the brush is super easy to use. If you wear liquid liner on the daily, this is definitely something to look into. 

The Star Studded Look... 

Overall, I've easily worked these products together and separately into my everyday routine. I'm impressed with the performance of each of these Kat Von D products. So, if you're looking to try a bit of Kat Von D, be sure to check out this limited edition set!
