NYX Butter Gloss in Cupcake (BLG18)

What amazes me most about the NYX Butter Gloss in Cupcake is that it actually smells like cupcakes (?) Late last year, I acquired the NYX Butter Gloss in Cupcake (~$4.99) via Jenn of A Beautiful Zen's kind friend Tian at IMATS. Here's the little advert blurb:

Get that creamy medium coverage on your lips without that sticky sensation. It's perfect for every sweet tooth! Softens and conditions lips while giving a hint of color and gloss.

Indeed the NYX Butter Glosses are quite sweet. If you're not into flavoured lip products, you might want to skip out on this, as the smell could be borderline overwhelming to some. Personally, I love sweet smelling things and the scent fades away as time goes on, so it's not a problem.

The NYX Butter Glosses are everything that you'd want in a lip gloss. A hint of colour, a lot of shine, and a lot of moisture. It's a slippy gloss not a sticky gloss, so it glides over the lips like ... ahem... butter. While I haven't heard a single bad thing about the NYX Butter Glosses, the product does have its faults. If I wear a slippy balm underneath the Butter Gloss, the Butter Gloss doesn't adhere well to the centre of the lips. Furthermore, lasting power is... meh (less than 2 hours)... but it doesn't matter because it feels so nice to apply throughout the day.

Cupcake is a neon pink shade and the sheerness of the colour makes it appropriate for any occasion. Overall, a very good gloss. I wouldn't say it's mindblowing or life changing but it's a good gloss that caters to my likes - hints of colour, lots of gloss, and a bit of hydration. Yes, indeed, I would purchase another colour.

NYX Collection Noir Liquid Black Liner

EYELINER MONDAY! The NYX Collection Noir Liquid Black Liner (~$5.99) is a "pro-artist favourite" that claims to deliver intense, smudge-proof, dance-proof, black colour.

The brush tip is tiny. While a precision applicator is appreciated, it takes forever and ever and ever to build up a thick winged liner with the puny brush. The formula is super black in a single swipe of the brush (hence being in NYX's "Collection Noir" line). For some reason, the liquid takes longer than normal to dry so you've gotta keep your eyes closed for a good 20-30 seconds or you risk getting strange liquid liner marks in your crease. After the liner dries, it stays put all day long. It's not waterproof but it doesn't move unless you rub your eyes.

While the NYX Collection Noir Liquid Black Liner is an amazing product, I don't find myself using it often because I don't typically have time to wait for my liner to dry. I'm more of an apply-and-go type of gal. That being said, when I do have time, the look of the ultra-black, long-lasting formula is definitely worth the wait.

NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencils in Milk and Cottage Cheese

My first ever enabled-by-the-internet beauty purchases were the NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencils in Milk and Cottage Cheese (~$5 each). Currently, stick eyeshadows are a thing nowadays but I'm pretty sure the NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencils pre-date a majority of them.

I've put these on the backburner for a while but Halloween blog posts (see here) and the need for a stark white base have forced me to shop my stash and pull out these beauties.

The NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencils come in 23 shades in either shimmery or matte finishes. From Lavender to Black Bean to Rocky Mountain Green, there's definitely a colour for everyone. Milk is a matte white, while Cottage Cheese is a white with fine silver shimmer.

When applied, more than anything, the NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencils are a cream product that stay creamy. The feel smooth and soft when applied and they stay tacky, transfer easily, fade away within a few hours, or even flood the crease of your eyes if you don't set the cream with a powder. When set with powder, the NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow pencils will last you 6-8 hours.

NYC HD Trio Eye Shadow Palette in 789 West Vintage

There are two clear reasons why the NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencils (especially Milk) are so popular in the beauty community. (1) Affordability (2) Versatility. Versatility in that you can use the NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencils in a multitude of ways, a few of them being...
  • As an eyeshadow primer, to make lacklustre eyeshadows pop (case in point, above)
  • As an inner corner highlight,
  • As a lower waterline highlight
  • As an eyeliner (when applied with a detail brush)
  • As a plain, old eyeshadow
  • As a mixing medium, to lighten darker cream shadows
  • As a white face paint (see all of the Halloween makeup looks I've ever posted)
... and the list goes on.

The clear plastic lids (which I hate) have cracked and I've taken to fixing them with scotch tape. My NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencils are way past their prime but there's a million reasons why I still keep them around.

Overall, the NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencils deserve all the attention they get. They're affordable makeup collection staples. Just don't forget that if you're using these for every day, you need to set them with powder to make them last!
