Maleficent Makeup Look X Angelina Jolie Cheekbones

Guess which Disney villain I am today? I have yet to watch the movie, but when I saw the promo pics for Maleficent starring Angelina Jolie, my first thought was "dang, I gotta recreate something like that"... and so here we are. :)

It's kind of funny because I showed a guy friend this makeup look, and he's like "wtf. that's scary."... GOOD. I'm supposed to be a scary villain not a cute little princess, so I guess I did my job in recreating look and feel of Maleficent.

At a glance, the Maleficent makeup look is actually quite simple in the movie. Neutral brown eye shadows, heavy contour (really, really heavy) and a red lip. I decided that instead of neutrals, I'd play around with greens to better enhance the colour of the green contacts from Angel Contacts.

EYES:
< brows > marcelle eyebrow pen*
< cream base > annabelle retractable eyeliner in peacock*
< liners > annabelle smoothliner in jade* (waterline) / annabelle eye ink in black* (cat eye)
< mascara > annabelle big show mascara*

LIPS:
< gloss > almay liquid lip balm in just plum*

FACE:

Yes, the eyes were a lot of work, but it's most certainly also about the contouring. Rather than just plain old sculpting, I traced my fish-face jaw line with a bit of the Mary Kay Mineral Eye Colour in Stone for extra definition and then went on to blend it out with the MAKE UP FOR EVER Sculpting Kit. I probably could have gone a LOT more dramatic, but the contour that I did do was even a little much for me.

I'm superbly pleased with how everything turned out. This was my first experience with coloured contacts and I think they look a little creepy on me (in a good way). In some ways, this look could be wearable on a night out if you took away the ridiculous contour or maybe the red lip. How do you think I did?

Have you watched Maleficent? What did you think?

Marcelle 2-in-1 Retractable Eyeliner in Purpurite

Purple is my favourite colour. Unfortunately, incorporating a pop of purple into the daily makeup routine isn’t the easiest of tasks. Indeed, purple lip colours (i.e. Revlon Matte Balm in Shameless and CoverGirl Lip Perfection in Delicious) are amazing, as is a lilac smoky eye. But neither is particularly wearable on the daily. The solution? Purple eyeliner all day every day.  It’s not as dark as black, nor is it as boring as brown or as flashy as turquoise. For purple liner, the Marcelle 2-in-1 Retractable Eyeliner in Purpurite ($10.95) is the way to go.

New for Spring 2014, the Marcelle 2-in-1 Retractable Eyeliner in Purpurite is a dark purple pencil liner. It’s called 2-in-1 for the define (liner) and smudge (sponge) characteristics. I think 3-in-1 would be more appropriate (for define, smudge AND sharpen), as it includes a nifty detachable sharpener underneath the smudge sponge.

Purpurite is mid-spectrum in terms of creaminess/waxiness. It’s not the richest, smoothest liner that I’ve tried but it doesn’t tug at my lids and provides just the right amount of product in one swipe. I find that a lack of creaminess actually makes for longer lasting eyeliner. This is, in fact, the case when it comes to Marcelle’s. The product claims 12-hour hold, but I'd say that it’s more like 10 on my oily lids for both the upper and lower lash lines (which is still pretty awesome).

Around the blogosphere, I've heard that purple is one of those colours that complement brown eyes. Marcelle’s 2-in-1 Retractable Eyeliner in Purpurite is on point for this particular usage and makes my eyes feel spring-time pretty.

Do you wear coloured eyeliner?
